Eight Trends Coming in 2026 That May Impact Quilting

I love to check out what trends seem to be popping up each year. Do you? These are some trends that may impact quilting and sewing hobbies. Here is what I’m seeing as 2026 trends to look for.

  1. Granny Crafts

I keep hearing this term! It includes all the crafts that aren’t created quickly but take a while to make. This would include quilting, hand sewing and hand embroidery, crochet, sewn cards and postcards just to name a few. These projects make us slow down and enjoy a journey. I’m seeing more “mini quilts” and smaller quilt projects. This is evident in the sewn cards, small embroidery and the rise of “cross stitch” again.

  • Hybrid Crafting

This would include joining two different crafts together, or any type of mixed media. People are experimenting with different crafts and creating cool things. Here’s what I’ve done in the past. I started with fabric squares and crocheted around each one, hoping to put them all together and make a “crocheted quilt”! Crocheting around fabric to make baby blankets with a crocheted border is also fun. Having fun creating unique items is what it’s all about.

  • Upcycle, Re-use, & Re-make

With the loss of JoAnn’s and the uncertainty around tariffs, we can see how this is a continuing trend. It’s been around for a couple of years. Old jeans are being made into so many things including quilts. I have a jean quilt pattern for you to check out. Scrap quilts are so popular because quilters have so many scraps and now with the cost of fabric, using scraps sounds more appealing. Quilt jackets or coats are still very popular made from unwanted quilts. Finally, there is a big push toward thrift stores to find fabric. Using shirts, sheets, jeans, etc. to create fabric for making things is really big right now.

  •  Miniatures

People love to play with and use miniature everything. My son’s fiancé had a bridal shower, and someone had made her a little miniature glass building with a scene inside of a chandelier that lit up, and a wedding dress, etc. it was neat. We also see Kobalt creating smaller versions of their large work bench. I got a couple for Christmas this year!

  •   Nature Inspired Designs

Some of these have been around for a couple of years. Natural fibers like burlap and cork are still around. Mushrooms are popular, along with animals and birds. New animals we are seeing are geese and ducks! This is a flashback from the eighties and nineties when “front porch concrete geese” were everywhere! Look around. I’m seeing them everywhere again. My daughter-in-law wanted a concrete goose, so we got one for her for Christmas. She intends to sew the clothes for it. She’s in her twenties and missed out on their popularity last time.

  •  Sewing/Crafting For Community & Connection

I was involved in a sewing group that met regularly when my kids were in school and I miss meeting with the ladies because we  shared our lives and sewing experiences. We made so many things and learned so many techniques that none of us would have if we had been at home sewing by ourselves! I highly recommend getting with a sewing/crafting group or creating one yourself.

  •  Vintage

This seems to encompass a time period, “we” didn’t live in. We are drawn to going back to a simpler time. Look for mid century modern décor, aprons, crazy quilting, and that all time favorite gingham pattern. I find myself decorating our condo in mid century modern furniture and color patterns.

  •  Personalization

Take a look around where you are and let me know what trends you are seeing. I think in general, people want less screen time, a simpler life, and finding a hobby they totally enjoy.
