Quilting at the Beach!

Yes! That sounds like a quilter’s dream vacation, right? Well, I have that for you in a quilt shop called, Quilting at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina! This is my first quilt shop review and I’m so excited to tell you about them! I want to find local quilt shops, when my husband and I travel around, so if you happen to visit some of the same places, or if you live near by, you can explore them too! With the internet we have access to just about any shop, anywhere, and that is a good thing. However, I know that if you are a quilter like me, nothing compares to visiting a shop in person. We love to look at every bolt of fabric and see what quilts and projects they have hanging on the walls. Then there is that all important “touch” factor which sparks such joy and is an impulse we can’t control! I see all the heads moving up and down, ha-ha.

Quilt Shop Review

My husband and I decided to head to the beach for a few days in May and I thought this might be a great opportunity for me to find a shop to review. The name, Quilting on the Beach, caught my eye. Great name, by the way! I was so nervous to go in and ask them if they would answer a few questions and let me write a blog about them. Fear left when I was greeted by three smiling faces. Thank you, Barbara, Anna, and Kim, for being so kind to me. They answered my questions and let me take some pictures.

This is Anna and Barbara. They look like they would be so fun to work with, don’t they!

Paul Johnson is the owner of Quilting at the Beach. It is the oldest and largest quilt shop on the Grand Strand. They are an authorized Janome dealer for those of you looking for a machine. There are a lot of bolts of fabric in the shop, but they specialize in 100% cotton batiks. They have a large selection of Patriotic fabrics for those Quilts of Valor projects,(find my post on charity quilting here) and many bolts of reproductive Civil War fabric. There is a large notions wall, that is growing all the time, along with many books, patterns, and kits!

Their clients are quilters who may need help with a project or just a little support along the way. They love helping you along your quilting journey and UFO’s are always welcome! They have a group that meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month called “Strippers”. You should definitely check that out if you live nearby!

Let Me Introduce You to the Staff:

  • Anna: She talks with everyone and makes all the placemats and apron samples.
  • Susan: She is very knowledgeable and a great problem solver. She makes kits and teaches classes.
  • Lori: She is also very knowledgeable. She does all the ordering of the notions and if they don’t have something you want, she will order it for you. Lori makes all the sample children’s books and also teaches classes.
  • Judy: She has worked at the shop for 10+ years! If you need to know yardage for quilts, table runners, etc. then she is who you want to talk to.
  • Kim: She is the machine specialist for the Janome machines. She sells many machines and is very knowledgeable about them. She makes some samples for the store and helps out wherever she can.
  • Donna: She is their “creative one”. If something can be done with fabric, she will do it!
  • Barbara: She is the store manager and keeps everything running on a daily basis. Along with all that she makes some samples for the store and orders a lot of the fabric.

Quilting at the Beach Quilt Shop has a fantastic staff! “Come in and take advantage of our highly experienced and extremely friendly staff to ensure your shopping experience is easy, fun and creative.” I must agree with their statement and if you live in the area or are just visiting go check them out. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks again Barbara for making my first quilt shop review fun and painless!!
