Scrap Happy With All Your Leftover Sewing Scraps With Easy To Do Projects!

Recently I’ve been on the topic of scraps.  I have accumulated many scraps throughout my years of sewing and have recently worked on organizing them and finding use for them in new easy projects, which I’ll share with you later. I first would like you to see what I’ve come up with for organizing mine.  I had them stuffed in the “sheet set” bags.  I don’t want to use those anymore for my scraps.  I do, however, still like to use them for some of my projects because they have zippers.

I found some great trays at The Dollar Tree, and they seem to be working right now for some scraps.  I am trying to place my scraps where they need to be as soon as I cut out a project.  I have another basket for bigger pieces that I need to cut down.  I think I want to cut them into 5” and 2 ½” squares to start.  I may have some projects in mind for these sizes and that’s why I chose them!

This takes me to what I recently found in my basement.  I found a tower of plastic drawers we used for school supplies when my boys were in school.  It needs a good cleaning, but I think it might work for my scraps.  There are three large drawers at the bottom that I can throw pieces to be cut.  In the smaller three drawers I can place my cut squares and strings! I plan for this to take the place of the dollar baskets.  I will keep you updated on that.  I’m hoping it works like I want it to!

Finally, I have a “scrap tower”.  I really like this, and I wish I could remember where I purchased it.  I’ve had it for so many years.  I keep it color coordinated.  It consists of fat quarters and some half yards that I’ve cut projects out of.  Pieces that are too big to be a scrap, in my mind, but too small to be with the fat quarters again or larger amounts of fabric.

Now for those easy projects I promised!  You can scour the internet or Pinterest for many ideas.  These are a few I found and they didn’t need a pattern to make them:

1.    Buttons or magnets.  These are so cute and fun to make.  The directions are in the package.  These would make such a nice “Thinking of you” gift to send to a friend.

I embroidered some initials and made them into buttons! Pictured in the packages are refill packs. Make sure you purchase the kit package so you have the tools you will need to make these. Tools shown at the bottom!

2.    Cards.  With these you can be so creative, and it can involve sewing or glue!  Again, you don’t need a reason to send someone a little surprise.  Sending cards is a dying tradition I’m afraid. Let’s send some this month and surprise friends and relatives.  It will make their day!

You see the fabric I’m going to use, the template to cut out the fabric that is going inside the envelope, the envelope and the cardstock I cut the card out of.
I wanted you to see that I used a product that has a glue on one side and paper backing on the other. Iron it to the wrong side of your fabric, pull off the paper, and iron it to your card. I did the same to the fabric I put in the envelope.

3.    Wrapping small gifts.  I love to wrap small gifts for my sewing friends with fabric!  It is part of their gift and who doesn’t love getting fabric!

4.    Tags.  This is another project where you can be creative.  There is so much inspiration out there to create such cute tags.  Get started early for next Christmas!

Here is the round up!  Make your cute buttons or magnets, wrap them in fabric and put an adorable tag on it.  Send or give them accompanied by the fabric card you made!  Now you’ve used all four ideas and created a gift…with scraps!  Yay!  I’m going to do this!  Let me challenge all of you to do it too!  Make sure you show us in the comments your creations!

Completed gift idea out of leftover scraps! I made magnets by pulling out the button shank and gluing on a small magnet to the buttons!

Next week I want to give a review of a product I found and am loving.  Have a great week and Always Find Time to Sew,

  1. I love how these are written! I don’t sew, but think the sentiment for reusing materials from old projects, and making them into new projects is useful for just about any kind of homesteading/creative endeavor

  2. I love ALL these ideas on reusing your scraps! The little tag is so cute and could be turned into a cute keychains as well! The buttons are so creative and could add some color to a boring dry erase board or refrigerator… or anything that’s magnetic!

    1. Thanks Morgan,

This is exactly the kind of response I’m looking for! You all sharing other ideas to add to mine. I’ve inspired you and that’s exactly one of my goals. Love YOUR ideas and keep sharing!
