Sew on the Go Kits

                                     Most of us who love to sew, like to keep our hands busy no matter where we are. We need sew on the go kits!

Here are some tips and ideas I use when creating my sew on the go kits.

In my mind there are two types of kits:

• Short stay
• Long stay

• Sitting on the couch, watching television.
• Going to an event that doesn’t need your full attention; kids ball practice, family picnic, day at the beach, you get the idea.

My short stay, sew on the go kits, are all my hand sewing projects that I like to do. This includes my crocheting and EPP or English Paper Piecing.

Cross stitching and hand embroidery have become popular again. This would work well for on the go too! I did it many years ago before I started quilting.

For the kit, I want to use a small box with a tight lid or some type of bag. Fabric needs to be cut and ready to sew. Then as few notions as you can get by with:

• Spool of thread
• Needle/threader
• Small scissors/snips
• Thimble
• Seam Ripper
• Pencil/notepad

I might add my crochet project. For this I would include, pattern, hooks, and yarn to the kit above.

• Vacation
• Staying with family or friends for an extended period of time.

When going away for a week or more then you might want to consider taking more than just the “short stay sew on the go kit”, although this would work and might be enough. Sometimes a break from sewing is good!

If you will have a lot of free time and there is room, then you might want to consider taking your sewing machine. My advice is to take a project that is already cut out. Maybe plan on just sewing up your blocks and nothing else. There would be no need for cutting boards, rulers, and rotary cutters! Simple is better. However, if you want to do some major sewing then include:

• Cutting Board
• Iron/Ironing Board—remember most places have these available to use so check on that first.
• Sewing Machine
• Rotary Cutter
• Rulers
• Book/Pattern
• Pins/Clips
• Extra Light if possible
• Thread
• Extra Needles
• Small Scissors/Snips
• Seam Ripper
• Bobbins
• Kitchen Sink—Just kidding, but hope you have a large vehicle!

We are heading out soon for a ten-day trip and I’m taking some English Paper Piecing and Crocheting. I will miss my sewing machine, but I want to explore up and down the coast and enjoy the beach.  Besides, I doubt if we will have room for my machine because we are bringing Mandalyn, and she will have her own baggage!
