Always Find Time To Sew!

I have a few ideas that will help you, always find time to sew! This is my motto because I love to sew and it can be great for your health. I wrote a blog about this topic called, “How Quilting Can Promote Better Health & Well-Being”.

I know that sewing, for me, checks so many boxes. I find it as an outlet for my creativity. Some patterns are challenging,(I have to use my brain), while others are relaxing to make. When I’m finished with a project I feel joy, accomplishment, pride, and it boosts my self confidence, not to mention what I may have learned in the whole process! That’s why it’s important that if you enjoy sewing and quilting that you always find time to sew!

Ideas To Help You Always Find Time To Sew

Space

Let’s first talk about space. This can be tricky, but not impossible to find. Not everyone can devote a whole room just for sewing. You don’t need a whole room, just a dedicated space.

Let me give you some ideas. Look around your house and in every room to see how you use the space. A formal dining room that is only used on holidays may work. Dedicate this space for your sewing area and when company comes you can move out your machine for a short time. For some of you, it can function as a sewing area 90 percent of the year!

Another option would be to look for a corner in one of your rooms that could provide enough space to place your machine on a table. This could be a guest room, master, living room, family room, or den/office. Having a dedicated space is going to help a lot by keeping your machine handy and the project you’re working on close by. Then when you get a chance, you can sit and sew.

The Next Step

I’m always saying this because it helps me so much. Before you get up from sewing remember to always leave “the next step to do”, by the machine. That way when you sit back down to sew, you know what to do and what you will be working on. There’s no wasting time trying to remember where you left off and what is next! Even if you only have five minutes, this enables you to use it all for sewing.

Sewing Sunday

“Sewing Sunday” actually just sounds good. Place any other day of the week in there that works for you! Dedicate one or several days a week where you give yourself an allotted time to sew. Arrange this with your family so they know this is your time and they need to find other things to do, even if it’s only for an hour or two. Pretty soon it will be recognized by the family and you’ll wonder why you didn’t create this dedicated time to sew sooner!

Utilize “Dead Time”

These are minutes where you are waiting for something else. Maybe dinner is baking, laundry is drying, or wet floors are drying. They are short 5-15 minute bursts that can progress your project more than you think.

Ask For Help

I think this one is over looked because we don’t feel sewing is a worthy enough endeavor to ask for help. Let me say that, IT IS. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have small children then ask and pay a teenager to come to the house and play with the kids while you are sewing. You don’t have to pay as much because you are there. Share babysitting with a neighbor, friend, or family member. Take turns watching each others kids.

Finally, get help with household chores. Vacuuming, loading and unloading the dishwasher, washing and drying the dishes, whatever it might be that can give you some time to sew.
